Usually iron, sometimes manganese riding along with it. Both leave marks on tiles and laundry, but they need different media beds and different backwash settings. That is why we test before sizing anything, rather than fitting a generic sediment filter and hoping.
Clear water says nothing about bacteria. Boreholes that test fine in winter can show counts after heavy rain, which is common on guesthouse and farm supplies. A sediment stage ahead of a UV reactor handles the particles, and a sample tap after the UV lets you check it quarterly.

Sediment cartridges get swapped on a schedule that depends on how dirty your supply runs. Iron and manganese beds backwash on a timer and need periodic media checks. UV lamps have a rated hour life and should be logged. We leave a wall chart in the pump room so nobody has to remember dates.
Yes, and we often do. Plenty of sites just need the tank stand rebuilt, a filter added ahead of the booster, or the plumbing rerouted so the tank feeds the house properly. We keep what is sound and replace what is causing the cycling or the sediment.
